Pre and after school activities at St. Malachy's Primary School
The idea of holistic development is very important and central to a child's education in St. Malachy's primary school. The school day at St. Malachy's has evolved from a 9:00am – 3:00pm day to a 8:00am – 5:30pm day, constantly providing children with opportunities to pursue and develop a range of activities and interests.
From 8:00am children can avail of the school's breakfast club ensuring a healthy start to their day and the chance to simply relax and take it easy. The after school club runs from 2:00pm – 5:30pm, providing children with the opportunity to enjoy a range of fun-filled activities and of course the chance to complete homework.
The week is also packed with additional after school activities, Monday is hurling and camogie with current Armagh hurler and national All-star winner, Ryan Gaffney. Tuesday is Gaelic football with current Armagh ladies star player, Aileen Matthews.
On Wednesday and Thursday handball takes place in the Eugene Quinn handball alleys with the highly regarded Armagh Sports Forum Coach of the year 2009, Joe Kelly. Classical guitar lessons with the experienced local musician, Gerry Goodwin, are available in school on Wednesday and Thursday.
Thursday, also gives all children from primary 1 – primary 7 the chance to participate in Irish dancing lessons with current Celtic Legends star Lorraine Scallon T.C.R.G.
The school choir sings monthly at 12 noon mass in St. Malachy's church and the choir practice each week under the guidance of primary 6 teacher Mr Mc Cusker.
Currently, local storyteller Tom Sweeney is running an 8 week programme mixing music, rhythm and rhyme, which is proving to be a very popular after school activity with all age groups.
Numerous other one off activities frequently take place, further adding to the busy daily life at St. Malachy's primary school, such as the highly successful Armagh Rhymers local school production and Bardic Educational Arts and Media (BEAM) Creative Network events, who are currently co-ordinating the St. Patrick's Day celebrations in Armagh.
